Lions Mane (Hericium Erinaceus) or otherwise known as hou tou gu, yamabushitake, or bears tooth have both medicinal and culinary uses in Asian countries like China, India, and Japan.  Despite being used for centuries in Eastern cultures, Lion's Mane has just recently become popular here in the West.  Lion's Mane renown comes from its brain boosting ability.  It is one of the few natural ingredients found on earth that has a Nootropic quality (small enough to pass through the blood-brain barrier).  It can also be used for culinary purposes as cooks will sauté them or add it to their dishes.  When cooked, Lion's Mane takes on the consistency of steamed lobster or crab and is often times used as a crab or lobster supplement

Lion's Mane can be found growing in the bark of dead or dying trees.  It usually likes the Hard wood type trees like maple and oak trees.  It doesn't look like your typical mushroom and will be white in appearance, and in the shape of a cheerleaders pom-pom. Its cotton-ball like formation will grow teeth like formations and have hair like ends which gives the impression of a shaggy lion's mane.

Cognitive Support

Lion's Mane (Hericium Erinaceus) is quickly gaining attention for its potential to support cognitive function. Research suggests that this functional mushroom contains bioactive compounds, including hericenones and erinacines, that have been studied for their role in supporting nerve growth factor (NGF). NGF plays a role in the maintenance of healthy nerve cells in the brain. By supporting NGF activity, Lion's Mane may help support neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to adapt and form new connections. This process is crucial for learning, memory, and overall cognitive health. As a result, Lion's Mane may help individuals experience improved mental clarity, focus, and memory retention.

4. Mood and Emotional Balance

Lion's Mane's potential role in mood support is multifaceted. It may support mood through several mechanisms, including supporting healthy levels of serotonin and dopamine—neurotransmitters associated with mood and well-being. Additionally, Lion's Mane's ability to support a healthy inflammatory response may have a positive effect on overall mood. A healthy inflammatory response in the brain is increasingly recognized as important for emotional well-being. By supporting a balanced inflammatory response, Lion's Mane may help promote emotional balance and a positive mood.

7. Lower Oxidative Stress:

Lion's Mane's ability to combat oxidative stress is one of its remarkable attributes. Oxidative stress occurs when there's an imbalance between the production of harmful free radicals and the body's ability to neutralize them with antioxidants. Over time, chronic oxidative stress can lead to various health issues.
Lion's Mane is rich in antioxidants, including glutathione, which can help neutralize free radicals. By doing so, it reduces the damaging effects of oxidative stress, contributing to overall health and longevity.

10. Cardiovascular Health:

Lion's Mane's potential benefits for heart and circulatory wellness are linked to its antioxidant properties. The antioxidants found in Lion's Mane may help support a healthy inflammatory response and defend against oxidative stress. Research has also explored how Lion's Mane may help support healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels already within the normal range, as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

2. Neurological Health:

Lion's Mane's potential in supporting neurological health extends to its antioxidant properties. Studies have explored how it may help defend the brain against oxidative stress and support a healthy inflammatory response. The compounds in Lion's Mane, particularly hericenones and erinacines, are nootropic components that researchers have studied for their ability to pass through the blood-brain barrier, where they may support Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) production. NGF plays a role in the survival and maintenance of nerve cells, making Lion's Mane a compelling natural option for those looking to support long-term brain health.

5. Increased Energy and Vitality:

Lion's Mane's reputation for increasing energy and vitality stems from its ability to combat fatigue and enhance overall vitality. While the exact mechanisms are still under investigation, it is believed that Lion's Mane's adaptogenic properties play a role.
Adaptogens are substances that help the body adapt to stress and maintain balance. Lion's Mane may support the body's stress response system, leading to increased energy levels and improved endurance over time.

8. Anti-Inflammatory Support:

A healthy inflammatory response is an important part of overall wellness. Lion's Mane contains compounds, including polysaccharides and phenolic compounds, which have been studied for their ability to support a healthy inflammatory response. These compounds may help support the body's natural inflammatory balance, contributing to everyday comfort and overall well-being.

11. Healthy Blood Sugar Support:

Lion's Mane has been studied for its potential to support healthy blood sugar metabolism. Research in animal studies has explored how Lion's Mane extracts may help support blood glucose levels and insulin sensitivity already within the normal range. As part of a balanced lifestyle, Lion's Mane may complement your everyday wellness routine.

3.  Focus and Attention:

Emerging research suggests that Lion's Mane may support healthy attention and focus. Lion's Mane's potential benefits in this context may be attributed to its neurotrophic effects and support for a healthy inflammatory response. Some studies indicate that Lion's Mane could support neurotransmitter activity and support healthy brain function. This may contribute to improved focus, attention, and impulse control as part of everyday mental performance.

6. Digestive & Liver Support:

Lion's Mane is associated with supporting healthy liver and gastrointestinal function. It contains bioactive compounds that researchers have studied for their role in supporting a healthy gut environment. Lion's Mane also has antioxidant attributes that may help support a healthy inflammatory response in the liver, as well as support comfortable, everyday digestion.

By supporting a healthy inflammatory response and helping defend against oxidative stress in these organs, Lion's Mane may help support overall digestive comfort and long-term liver wellness.

9. Immune Support:

Lion's Mane's immune-supporting capabilities are attributed to its impact on the gut-brain axis, a complex communication network between the digestive system and the brain. A significant portion of the immune system resides in the gut, and Lion's Mane supports gut health. By promoting a healthy gut microbiome and supporting a healthy inflammatory response in the gut, Lion's Mane may help support the body's natural immune function. This can contribute to a healthy, balanced immune system overall.

12. Cellular Health & Immune Support:

Emerging research has suggested that Lion's Mane may have potential as an anticancer agent. Some studies have shown that its bioactive compounds, such as polysaccharides and beta-glucans, exhibit anti-tumor properties.
Lion's Mane may work by stimulating the body's immune system, enhancing the body's ability to recognize and eliminate abnormal cells, and inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. While more research is needed, these findings offer hope for those exploring natural methods of cancer prevention and treatment. Curious about the science?
